Job Title: Senior Photographer, P3 Department/ Office: Department of Public Information Duty Station: NEW YORK Posting Period: 22 October 2012-21 December 2012 Job Opening number: 12-PUB-DPI-23765-R-NEW YORK(G) Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Photo Unit, Audiovisual Services Section, Operations Branch, News and Media Division (NMD) of the Department of Public Information (DPI). The incumbent reports to the Chief of the Photo Unit. Responsibilities Under the supervision of the Chief of the Photo Unit, the incumbent: provides photographic coverage of the work of the Untied Nations both at the Headquarters and in the field, including travelling with the Secretary-General; provides input and expertise in image selection for public dissemination; acts as the Photo Editor when required; conducts research and provides metadata for captioning and archiving purposes; assists in overseeing photo lab operations and quality control of output; contributes to UN Photo’s coverage planning; conduct researches and makes recommendations for coverage of UN activities in the field; liaises with peacekeeping missions, offices away from the headquarters and other entities both inside and outside the UN System for collaborations including joint coverage, photo exchanges and acquisitions; maintains close contact with media outlets to ensure speedy dissemination and widest possible usage of UN photos; contributes to the long-term development of UN Photo, including recommending the uses of new technologies and platforms to further the work of UN Photo and the public information outreach of the Organization; acts as Officer-in-Charge during the absence of the Chief of the Unit; and undertakes other assignments as required. Education Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, photography/visual arts or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Work Experience A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations or related area. Experience providing photo coverage in the field and at live events is required. Photo coverage at an international level is desirable; experience as a travelling photographer with very senior officials is desirable. Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of another United Nations official language is an advantage. Assessment Method Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
