Job Title: INTERN - STATISTICS, I Department/ Office: Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia Duty Station: BEIRUT Posting Period: 6 September 2012-7 January 2013 Job Opening number: 12-STT-ESCWA-25230-R-BEIRUT (O) United Nations Core Values: Integrity, Professionalism, Respect for Diversity Org. Setting and Reporting The duration of an ESCWA internship is normally two months on a full time basis - this may be extended for a maximum period of six months. It is awarded on the recommendation of the Director of the Statistics Division. Interns are not paid and are responsible for all expenses related to the internship. ESCWA accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during an internship. Therefore, upon awarding an internship, candidates will be required to sign a statement confirming their understanding and acceptance of the conditions of service. This internship is located within the Statistics Division (SD) of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia. The intern reports directly to the senior manager (Chief of Section/Unit) and will be under the overall supervision of the Director of the Statistics Division. Responsibilities - Conducts research and reference searches as needed; - Compiles, processes and manipulates data sets derived from a variety of sources; - Updates statistical series in established formats. Applies new data and derived statistics, enters data on survey reports, and provides information for publication and databases; - Prepares charts, graphs and other outputs for reporting and presentation of various data; - Assists in the preparation of progress/status of implementation reports; - Provides support to the implementation of training workshops and meetings; - Prepares data sets upon request, responds to queries/requests and maintains/updates web pages; - Performs other duties as assigned. Creativity - Actively seeks to improve programmes or services; offers new and different options to solve problems or meet client needs; promotes and persuades others to consider new ideas; takes calculated risks on new and unusual ideas; thinks "outside the box"; takes an interest in new ideas and new ways of doing things; is not bound by current thinking or traditional approaches. Technological Awareness - Keeps abreast of available technology; understands applicability and limitations of technology to the work of the office; actively seeks to apply technology to appropriate tasks; shows willingness to learn new technology. Education The following criteria are used to determine eligibility for the ESCWA Internship Programme: 1. Applicants are enrolled in a degree programme in a graduate school (second university degree or higher) at the time of application and during the internship; 2. Applicants pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree. 3. The area of study of the prospective intern is related to the functional areas of ESCWA’s programme of work and administration. Work Experience Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme. Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. Arabic is also a working language of ESCWA. For this post, fluency in written and spoken English is required. Knowledge of Arabic is desirable.
