Specific Minimum Qualifications and Expertise
- At least degree level education in economics or a related analytical discipline
- Strong analytical skills, with the ability to deliver insightful quantitative and qualitative analysis
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the capability to convey technical or complex issues to non-specialists
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative, think creatively and work independently
Desirable (but not essential)
- Expertise in regulatory, energy or competition economics
- Expertise and/or good knowledge of the operation of energy markets
Purpose
You will join a team that oversees the functioning of the wholesale market to make sure it is effectively delivering consumers’ interests. Your analysis and insights will be key to the success of critical projects at the forefront of GB market development. You will have the opportunity to contribute to work in high profile areas including our input into the Government’s electricity market reform, our proposals for improving market liquidity, reforming cash out arrangements (gas and electricity) and investigations into market behaviour (including potential Competition Act cases), and our work on gas security of supply.
Key Outputs and Deliverables
- Develop economic analysis to reinforce and improve the team’s understanding of the functioning of wholesale energy markets.
- Apply analysis to inform regulatory interventions, where possible identifying and evaluating alternative options and bringing strategic considerations to the teams’ attention.
- Ensure that the results of any analysis are effectively communicated internally within the team, to other teams within Ofgem and externally, where appropriate.
- Apply written communication skills to contribute to the production of internal and external documents.
- Contribute to the delivery of wider projects in the Markets division and Ofgem.
Key Stakeholder Relationships
- Build effective relationships with industry, ensuring Ofgem policy and analysis is clearly set out at all times. This is likely to include representing Ofgem at industry meetings/seminars/working groups.
- Communicate and co-ordinate effectively with government departments, such as DECC and the Treasury.
- Build relationships with other teams and directorates within Ofgem, providing advice and input into their work.
