Application Deadline: 9 November 2012 Duty Station: Lyons, France Organization unit: IARC (IARC) Section of Environment and Radiation (ENV) OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME : The overall objectives of the Section of Environment and Radiation (ENV) are to investigate risk factors of cancer in human populations related to environmental, lifestyle, occupational or radiation-related exposures. These objectives are achieved through international epidemiological collaborative studies, contributing to the overall strategy of the Agency leading to the identification of causes of human cancer and their prevention. Description of duties: Under the supervision of the Head of the Section, the incumbent will continue the Section's involvement in occupational cancer epidemiology studies (in particular SYNERGY, I4C, INHANCE) involving scientific coordination of study consortia and writing of scientific publications, and will assist the Section in its effort to expand research on occupational risk factors for cancers to low and middle income countries. The main duties are as follows: 1. Take over as scientific coordinator the Section's activities on occupational risk factors for cancer, in particular the coordination of the SYNERGY consortium (occupational risk factors for lung cancer). 2. Use the Section's involvement in ongoing projects on occupational risk factors for cancer to produce scientific output (peer reviewed manuscripts, conference presentations). 3. Assist in the Section's effort to expand in the field of occupational cancer epidemiology to launch new studies in low and middle income countries, including identifying research collaborations and assist in the writing of grant proposals. 4. Carry out other related duties as assigned by the Section Head or Director, including maintaining contacts with funding bodies, undertaking duty travel and representing the Agency and Section as required, and supervising pre- and post-doctoral students. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Education: Ph.D. in Epidemiology. Skills: Excellent knowledge in the field of occupational cancer epidemiology Ability to draft manuscripts and technical reports. Ability to assist in writing of grant proposals. Ability to work in international collaborative projects. Experience in working as scientific coordinator or scientific secretary. Knowledge in statistical analyses of epidemiological studies would be an asset. Required WHO competencies: Ability to: - produce and deliver quality results, - respect and promote individual and cultural differences, and work constructively with people of all backgrounds and orientations, - be open to and propose new approaches and ideas, - Excellent oral and written communication skills. Experience: Essential: At least two years of postdoctoral experience in the field of occupational cancer epidemiology, as demonstrated by respective lead authorships of relevant peer reviewed publications. Desirable: Working in international collaborative projects. Languages: Excellent knowledge of English. Knowledge of French is an asset.
