Objectives of the Programme and of the immediate unit or field activity: To ensure the continuing availability to Member States of valid scientific, technical, managerial and other information relating to health, in printed or other forms. The unit ensures the availability of such material in English and French, official languages of WHO's Eastern Mediterranean Region. Description of duties: Organizational Context: Under the direct supervision of the Programme Manager and overall guidance of the Director, Information, Evidence and Research, the incumbent will provide high quality English/French translation and editorial support in French on a wide variety of texts dealing with medicine, public health and related subjects as well as administrative, financial and legal matters, contributing to the establishment of accurate terminology in French, and editing of French texts. The incumbent is expected to work independently, in close collaboration with colleagues, whether internal or external. Summary of Assigned Duties: - Translates from English into French, and vice versa occasionally, official documentation of governing bodies, correspondence and technical and non-technical materials of varying degrees of complexity, including web content; - Reviews and finalizes outsourced translation; - Edits, proofreads and finalizes information products and web content of the Regional Office in French, including original publications, and posts content to the web site; - Establishes and maintains standards for French publications and terminology and advises on French usage. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Education: Essential: University degree in translation/modern languages. Desirable: Post-graduate degree in a relevant field. Skills: Functional Skills and Knowledge: Ability to use computer-assisted translation tools and to conduct terminological research. Knowledge of editing principles and techniques. Team spirit, tact and discretion essential. Ability to work under pressure. Other Skills: Proficiency in standard WHO computer applications. Competencies: 1) Communicating in a credible and effective way (Core) 2) Fostering integration and teamwork (Core) 3) Knowing and managing yourself (Core) 4) Producing results (Core) Other Skills: Proficiency in standard WHO computer applications. Experience: Essential: At least 5 years experience in translation in the health field, including experience in editing. Desirable: Experience in UN System or an international organization/institution is an advantage. Languages: Mother tongue French and excellent knowledge of English. Working knowledge of Arabic an asset.
