Org. Setting and Reporting
The duration of an ESCWA internship is normally two months on a full time basis - this may be exceptionally extended for a maximum period of six months. It is awarded on the recommendation of the Director of the respective Division.
Interns are not paid and are responsible for all expenses related to the internship.
ESCWA accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during an internship. Therefore, upon awarding an internship, candidates will be required to sign a statement confirming their understanding and acceptance of the conditions of service.
This internship is located within the ICT Application Section, Information and Communication Technology Division (ICTD) of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia. The intern reports directly to the Chief, ICT Application Section, and will be under the overall supervision of the Director of ICTD.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities of the internship position encompass all aspects of ICTD’s work: Information Society, Knowledge Society, ISPER and EGMs. The intern will be responsible for carrying out, but not limited to, the following tasks:
•Conducting research on issues relating to the Information Society, Knowledge Society, ICT for Development, and other areas relating to the economic and social impact of ICT;
•Assisting in the compilation of ICT indicators including collection, consolidation, and data entry into divisional systems under the supervision of the section;
•Drafting relevant content for posting on the divisional portal (ISPER) and performing quality control;
•Attending and taking notes at Expert Group Meetings (EGM) and workshops; and
•Attending team meetings.
In addition, the intern will undertake any additional tasks deemed necessary by his/her supervisor.

Education
The following criteria are used to determine eligibility for the ESCWA Internship Programme:
1. Applicants are enrolled in a degree programme in a graduate school (second university degree or higher) at the time of application and during the internship in any of the following areas: Information and Communication Technology, Engineering, Maths, Statistics, Economics or Business Administration;
2. Applicants pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree. The intern will be required to present a proof of enrollment.
3. The area of study of the prospective intern is related to the functional areas of ESCWA’s programme of work and administration.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. Arabic is also is a working language of ESCWA. For this post, fluency in both written and spoken English and Arabic is required.
