Org. Setting and Reporting
The duration of an ESCWA internship is normally two months on a full time basis – this may be exceptionally extended for a maximum period of six months. It is awarded on the recommendation of the Director of the respective Division.
Interns are not paid and are responsible for all expenses related to the internship.
ESCWA accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during an internship. Therefore, upon awarding an internship, candidates will be required to sign a statement confirming their understanding and acceptance of the conditions of service.
This internship is located within the Office of the Executive Secretary (OES) of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA). The Intern reports directly to the Deputy Executive Secretary (DES), collaborates with the Associate Programme Officer and will be under the direct supervision of the Deputy Executive Secretary.
Responsibilities
The candidate will be supporting the Deputy Executive Secretary (DES) substantively and administratively by performing the following tasks:
1- Assists in substantive policy research and reviews related to the work of the DES, in the areas of: economic and social development, governance, and gender issues under the current context of the Arab region;
2- Assists in preparing background notes for meetings of the DES, missions and other substantive assignments;
3- Assists in identifying potential partners for cooperation;
4- Assists in writing concept notes and proposals for partnerships and funding;
5- Assists the DES in his internal meetings: prepares relevant documents; reviews documents, proposals produced by Publication Committee and Project Committee; sends invitations; takes minutes of meetings and produces meeting reports; follows up on activities;
6- Assists in other ad-hoc activities as instructed.

Education
The following criteria are used to determine eligibility for the ESCWA Internship Programme:
1- Applicants are enrolled in a degree programme in a graduate school (second university degree or higher) at the time of application and during the internship;
2- Applicants pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages have completed at least our years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree.
3- The area of study of the prospective intern is related to the functional areas of ESCWA’s prgoramme of work and administration.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for application in the programme.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. Arabic is also a working language of ESCWA. For this post, fluency in written and spoken English is required.
