Setting and Reporting The Social Statistics internship is for at least 3 months with an opportunity for extension, pending on the needs of the department. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. ESCAP Statistics Division The ESCAP Statistics Division is guided by the Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics and the Principles Governing International Statistical Activities, and by the work programme and the membership of ESCAP. Our mandates arise from a number of General Assembly, ECOSOC and ESCAP resolutions. The core areas of the Division's work include implementing programmes for capacity building in statistics; collecting and analysing data on the region; and publishing statistical and analytical publications. We work closely with organizations that are part of national statistics systems in the region (national statistical offices are our main counterparts); the Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific; the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs; other United Nations regional and subregional offices; and with a large number of international agencies that have a mandate in statistics. Responsibilities The incumbent will participate in one or more activities related to social statistics at the secretariat, mainly in the development of regional programmes on social statistics and gender statistics, as well as implementing the regional programme to improve civil registration and vital statistics. Within delegated authority, the duties of the incumbent may include the following: 1. Support the work related to the development of regional programmes on social statistics and gender statistics: undertake review of literature on theoretical frameworks, indicators, and country practices; contribute to the drafting and reviewing of technical documents; participate in project meetings and discussions 2. Support the assessment of progress in achieving the Millennium Development Goals in Asia and the Pacific by undertaking analyses of data from a variety of sources 3.Support the implementation of the regional programme on the improvement of civil registration and vital statistics systems in Asia and the Pacific 4. Participate in the substantive servicing of expert group meetings, seminars, training workshops, and perform other tasks as required. Be computer literate in standard software applications; Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and Have a demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Work Experience Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme. Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required for the Internship Programme.
