Setting and Reporting The ESCAP Pacific Office internship is for 3-6 months with an opportunity for extension, pending on the needs of the department. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. Established in 1984, the ESCAP Pacific Operations Centre (EPOC) in Suva, Fiji, is ESCAP’s representative office in the Pacific. The Centre covers Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Micronesia (Federated States of), Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu, as well as American Samoa, the Cook Islands, French Polynesia, Guam, New Caledonia, Niue and the Northern Mariana Islands. The ESCAP Pacific Operations Centre assists Pacific island developing countries by: • conducting research on economic and social issues relevant to policy makers; • promoting regional cooperation and sharing knowledge and good practices; • providing regional advisory services on economic and social policies; • building institutional capacity through training workshops; • assisting policy implementation through pilot projects. Responsibilities Under the general guidance of Head, ESCAP Pacific Office and the direct supervision of staff members of the Office, the intern will undertake the following assignments during the period of his/her internship: • Draft a substantive paper on a particular issue affecting the Pacific island developing countries and territories, in consultation with staff of the Office. • Assist in preparation of written outputs e.g. background papers, analytical notes, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, published by the ESCAP Pacific Office. • Assist in the organization of conferences related to the implementation of the Mauritius Strategy and other sustainable development issues facing the Pacific Island countries. • Undertake any other assignments related to the implementation of the work programme, as required by the Office. Be computer literate in standard software applications; Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and Have a demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Work Experience Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme. Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required for the Internship Programme.
