Job Title: INTERN - HUMAN RIGHTS, I Department/ Office: Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights Duty Station: BANGKOK Posting Period: 30 March 2012-14 January 2013 Job Opening number: 12-HRI-OHCHR-23099-R-BANGKOK (O) United Nations Core Values: Integrity, Professionalism, Respect for Diversity Org. Setting and Reporting The Office of United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) Regional Office for South-East Asia’s internship is for 6 months. The internship is unpaid and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member. Interns must be currently enrolled in a Master’s Degree Programme (or equivalent) in International Law, Political Science, Social Science, Economics, History, and related fields. Interns learning opportunities: Interns will have opportunities to broaden their human rights experience and knowledge; exposure to the work of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in South-East Asia and human rights related work in other UN agencies; broaden the understanding of current human rights issues in South-East Asia and globally; and introduced to the functioning of United Nations human rights bodies and mechanisms. Interns are integrated in the OHCHR team, they participate and contribute to staff meetings and discussions, research human rights issues, draft papers and reports, develop and maintain information databases, and provide support to other OHCHR activities. Interns work under the supervision of OHCHR’s staff. Interns receive some information sessions on the United Nations and human rights issues. In addition, interns have an opportunity to attend lectures, and other events related to human rights held in Bangkok. Responsibilities (1) Assist in monitoring developments (human rights, politics, conflicts) in the South-East Asia region, and to follow up individual cases in line with provisions of the treaty body mechanisms and the special procedures. (2) Assist in preparing and distributing a daily news review every morning to send to HQ in Geneva, which will provide information on the human rights situation in each ASEAN country, and individual cases where violations of human rights are reported. (3) Assist in preparing monthly review to give an overview of the human rights situation in assigned countries for inclusion in the office’s monthly report. (4) Assist in updating and maintaining information in the Regional Office’s Website. (5) Assist in organizing workshops and seminars. (6) Assist in overseeing maintenance and further development of the office’s information and resource tools and, where necessary, directly update and produce the information and resource tools, including: the website, and tables relating to treaties and special procedures. (7) Contribute to the preparation of internal and external reports on the work of the Regional Office. (8) Attend and take notes in meetings/conferences as requested by the Regional Representative. (9) Perform other tasks as necessary. Education university degree or higher); or if pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, have completed at least fours years of full-studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree. Be computer literate in standard software applications; Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and Have a demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Work Experience Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme. Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required for the Internship Programme.
