Org. Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations systems designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. This post is located within the Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions dealing with Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) related matters at the Geneva duty station. Under the supervision of the Chief Conventions Operations Branch (CCOB), the incumbent will perform the following:
Responsibilities
1. Support the coordination and organization of the meetings of Conference of the Parties to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions:
a. Contributes to the preparation and drafting of meeting documents, president’s notes, briefing books, talking points and other supporting documents
b. Collaborate with the Information Technology staff on the preparation of the paperless meeting, in particular setting up the intranet page.
c. Work with the chief of the branch to facilitate the meetings, in particular on documents management, preparation of the meeting report, distribution of documents over the intranet page, managing the projection of documents in plenary and any other matters
2. Support the work of the Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee and other subsidiary bodies of the Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions
a. Support the subsidiary bodies in its work, including communication with members, logistical arrangements, and preparation of substantive discussions
b. Provide substantive assistance to the ad hoc working groups in their intersessional work
c. Liaise with relevant parties on the updating of their website
d. Contributes to the preparation and publication of documents for the meetings of the subsidiary bodies
3. Support Parties to achieve environmentally sound management of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs)
a. Support transition of the PCBs Elimination Network (PEN) to UNEP Chemicals
b. Provide substantial input to the Technical Assistance work on supporting countries to achieve environmentally sound management of PCBs (projects, workshops, webinars, etc.)
d. Assist the responsible officer in enhancing the electronic reporting format concerning the reporting on PCBs.
4. Performs other duties as required

Education
Advanced University degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in environmental or natural sciences, chemistry studies, environmental policy and/or other relevant disciplines. A first level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in the field of environmental or natural sciences, chemistry, environmental policy development and/or other relevant disciplines.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Working knowledge of French or another UN language is desirable.
Assessment Method
Evaluation of qualified candidates for this position may include a substantive assessment which will be followed by a competency-based interview.
