Org. Setting and Reporting
The OES/SCAS internship is for 2-6 months. The internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
The interns will gain first-hand experience with regard to the United Nations ESCAP’ activities in the area of strategic communications and advocacy as well as public information and media relation. They will also gain a greater understanding of how the UN ESCAP works and its range of activities, particularly in the region of Asia and the Pacific.
Responsibilities
Centred on assisting ESCAP’s Strategic Communications and Advocacy Section (SCAS) in discharging a range of strategic communications and advocacy as well as public information tasks to raise visibility of ESCAP.
• Draft press releases and other public information materials (in English)
• Help translate information materials from English into Thai and vice versa, if applicable
• Help prepare the daily ESCAP Morning News Headlines
• Help monitor news clippings from local newspapers on global, regional and national issues for UN HQs
• Prepare media analysis from the compilation of UN and ESCAP-related news stories
• Help obtain/translate news clippings on the UN and ESCAP from newspapers and online sources
• Provide research for backgrounders/information materials
• Prepare questionnaires on strategic communications and advocacy as well as public information activities, conduct related surveys, and analyze the results
• Help design and prepare various information materials and publications
• Assist in the preparation of briefing sessions on the work of ESCAP and other UN agencies for UN Briefing Programme
• Assist in the organization and execution of special events to mark UN observances, press conferences, media launches or exhibitions
• Assist with contributions to ESCAP’s website
• Take the lead in assigned tasks/special projects

Education
Applicants must be enrolled in a degree programme in a graduate school(second university degree or higher); or if pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, have completed at least fours years of full-studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree.
Be computer literate in standard software applications;
Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
Have a demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required for the Internship Programme. Knowledge of another official UN language is an asset.
